Will you become fat from drinking beer?





Do you enjoy drinking? Well, some say that having a few cans of beer is alright and some say that you cannot even have one or your abs will magically disappear when you wake up the next day.

Well, today I will be discussing this particular topic so that you people can decide your best course of action after reading this post.

What is a can of beer?

I think the best way to explain this is by starting off with showing you how many calories a typical can of beer provides.

A can of beer gives you around 150 calories and sometimes can go up to 200 depending on the brand. This is per can! Empty calories that do not give you any nutrients yet enjoyable 😉 

An average person should take around 1600-2500 calories in a day depending on the sex, age and activities. One thing to keep in mind is that, if you take in more than the calories you need per day, then your weight will most likely start increasing.

Substituting beer for your meal?

Let’s give you something to relate to… 3 cans of beer are equivalent to 1 standard meal (Estimation). Yes, that’s a lot.

And imagine yourself at a party, how many cans of beer do you usually drink? You do the maths and figure out how many meals you had on that particular day. You probably had far too many.



What about other alcoholic beverages?

Well.. you can get a list of their calories here. Just so you know, all of them packs a whole lot of calories if you drink a lot that night.

Cocktails are definitely the worst of them all if you compare their volume relatively to a beer. Especially the sweet ones that have so much sugar in them. And the sugar (also empty calories) makes you crave for more food. It stimulates your appetite and you have that urge to reach for food. The next minute, you end up gulping down even more calories.

So I just have to limit my beer intake right?

Well, yes, of course! You should keep track of your calorie intake for the day and make sure you have room for those cans of beer later on.

If you have not started counting calories, you probably should give it a try. Anyhow, you can always eat less in the day so that you have room for a few cans of beer later on.

A good option would be to eat 50% less for 2 meals and that’d probably give you leverage to around 2 cans of beer at the party later. Though this wouldn’t be a very good recommendation. I still highly recommend calories counting to be more accurate.

But I am still putting on weight even if I drank only 1 can of beer per day!

Well, my friend, you most likely have exceeded your daily calorie limit. Other than the beer, you are eating too much in a day.

One thing to keep in mind is that, when people are enjoying at a party, they tend to eat a lot more than they should. You should probably worry more about what you’re putting in your mouth rather than that can of beer you’re holding.

Is that all I need to know?

Aside from beer being high in calories, it also programs your body to store fat! How?

  1. Your liver can metabolize (or break down) either alcohol or fat at the same time.
  2. Studies have shown that your liver will metabolize the alcohol first before the fat.
  3. Therefore, if you are eating a lot of fatty food right before or during or after gulping down cans of beer… then there will be a high risk that these fats will be stored in your body as fat.

The best way to drink beer

Now that I have covered most of what you should know about drinking beer. I will leave you with a few things to keep in mind:

  • Opt for the light beer whenever possible as it has lower calories (~100 per can) so… you can probably drink one additional can?
  • Stay away from the snacks or junk food at parties.
  • Try not to consume food that is fatty in nature before, during or after your drinking session.
  • One drinking session per week is acceptable.
  • 1-2 cans per session are alright. Anything more is highly not recommended.

As for the last 2 points, I will cover it in my next blog post dedicated for people who wants to put on muscle, especially bodybuilders.

If you are not concerned about muscle growth, you can ignore the last 2 points.
